YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Green Bay volleyball team made quick work of the Youngstown State Penguins Friday night, sweeping the Penguins (25-19, 25-22, 25-22). Cora Behnke led the Phoenix with 17 kills while Katie Schulz chipped in with 11. GB moved to 1-0 in Horizon League play with the win.
Defensively, Green Bay had two players reach double figures in digs, as Emma Best had 15 and Kendall Schara had 12. Calli Gentry chipped in with 31 assists to lead the Green & White.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Phoenix grabbed control of the set-one lead at 4-3 and never looked back to win 25-19. Green Bay led by seven points at 21-14 after a 5-0 run that allowed them to cruise the rest of the way. GB got a solid defensive performance from the front row that blocked six Youngstown State attacks in the set.
SET 2 | Youngstown State responded in the second set and took a 14-6 lead to start the set. The Penguins held that lead for most of the set, eventually leading 22-16. However, that was when the GB offense came alive, rattling of a 9-0 run to win the second set 25-22. The 9-0 run included 4 kills from Behnke, including the last three points of the frame.
SET 3 | Green Bay once again had a large run that made the difference in the third set. YSU held a 12-8 lead before the Phoenix went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-12 lead that would hold the remainder of the set.
