GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay women's soccer team's comeback came up just short, as they fell by a score of 3-2 at Milwaukee in the regular season finale. The Panthers wrapped up the regular season Horizon League Championship with the win.
Green Bay ended the regular season as the No. 5 seed and will head to Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday for a first-round matchup with No. 4 Wright State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix offense was responsible for the game's first three shots, without a score to show for it. The Panthers would ultimately strike on their first shot of the game in the 27th minute, tapped in by Mallory McGuire. MKE would enter halftime with that 1-0 lead intact.
Milwaukee delivered a big strike early in the second half, with Lola Wojcik scoring a goal off a deflection off the Phoenix defense in the 47th minute. The Panthers then quickly extended the lead 3-0 when Kristina Karlof volleyed in a combo of passes from McGuire and Kiersten White, who were both given assists on the play.
The Phoenix broke through in the 67th minute off an unassisted
Laney Stark goal. A yellow card on Milwaukee's Lola Wojcik in the 89th minute helped set up a
Rebecca Stoeckmann goal off her knee in the 90th minute from an assist by
Nell Smith, the first collegiate point of her career, to make it 3-2. However, the late-game heroics weren't enough for the Phoenix to climb out of the deficit, and Green Bay's win streak ended at the hands of Milwaukee.
GAME NOTES
- Laney Stark's 4th goal now ranks her second on the team.
- Green Bay outshot Milwaukee 16 to seven and led the Panthers with five shots on goal to four.
- Stoeckmann is now tied for third on the Phoenix with three goals this season.
- Green Bay will make a Horizon League Championships appearance for the first time since the 2021 season.
COMING UP
As mentioned earlier, the No. 5-seeded Green Bay Phoenix will head to the No. 4-seeded Wright State Raiders in Dayton, Ohio, on Sunday with kick-off scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
