Schultz Pours in 22 Points, Green Bay Falls to Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – The Green Bay Women's Basketball team battled at the Kohl Center Sunday afternoon but fell to the Wisconsin Badgers 76-72. The loss snapped Green Bay's four-game win streak against Wisconsin.

The Phoenix (4-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Meghan Schultz, who had 22 points, her third 20-point game of the season. Kamy Peppler added a season-high 15 points and six assists, and Carley Duffney helped out with 11 points, four assists, and two steals.

Wisconsin also had three score in double figures, led by Destiny Howell's 23 points. Breauna Ware and Kyrah Daniels scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.

"I was really proud of our start to this game and our fearlessness offensively," said Head Coach Kayla Karius. "Though we wish the outcome was different, we will learn a lot from this game and I fully expect us to get better because of it. We appreciate Coach Pingeton's willingness to play us as I think today was a great day for women's basketball fans in the state of Wisconsin."

HOW IT HAPPENED

After falling behind 11-8, Green Bay went on a 9-0 run with 6:19 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Kristina Ouimette, to take a 17-11 lead. The Phoenix then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 25-15 advantage. Green Bay knocked down four threes in the first to account for 12 of its 25 points.

The Badgers bounced back, outscoring Green Bay 21-12. GB entered halftime with a 37-36 lead after a Peppler three with three seconds to go gave them the lead.

Wisconsin then took a 49-42 lead following intermission before Green Bay went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Maddy Skorupski, to trim its deficit to 49-48 with 1:03 to go in the third. That one point Badgers lead held for the remainder of the quarter, ending the third up 51-50.

Wisconsin widened that lead in the fourth, constructing a 58-50 advantage before Green Bay responded with a 5-0 run, finished off by Peppler's three, to shrink the deficit to 58-55 with 8:09 to go in the contest. However, the Phoenix was never able to cut the Wisconsin lead to less than three down the stretch as the Badgers took it 76-72.
