ABOUT THE PENGUINS
Youngstown State is hanging right around the middle of the Horizon League standings, entering Thursday's contest in 8th place, but sits just a game and a half back of the number five seed. The Penguins have struggled in contests away from their home court, posting a 1-7 away record and 1-9 overall, including two neutral games. Green Bay already beat Youngstown State earlier this season, handing the Penguins a 58-50 loss on January 9.Â
Natalie McNeal led all players with 17 points, and the Phoenix used a strong start, by outscoring YSU 19-9 in the first quarter, to escape Youngstown with a victory.
Overall, Green Bay has dominated the all-time series, boasting a 49-6 record against the Penguins. GB has won the last five meetings, six of the last seven, and nine of the last 11, dating back to 2019. Green Bay has scored at least 67 points in seven of the previous 10 meetings. Jewel Watkins is YSU's best scorer at 14.5 points per game, but Sophia Gregory has been a stat-sheet stuffer for the Penguins. She paces YSU in rebounds (7.5 RPG), steals (1.3 SPG), and blocks (1.1 BPG).
1. #NGWSD
Green Bay is celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Thursday, but the official national celebration is Wednesday, February 5. Green Bay Athletics is proud to have 24 women working in the department, combined with coaches, administrators, and sports medicine. There are also over 150 Phoenix female student-athletes.
2. HOME SWEET HOME
GB is in the midst of having three home games in a four-game stretch. The Phoenix is 242-35 (87.4 win percentage) all-time at the Kress since the arena's inception in 2007. Green Bay is going for its 10th win at home this season, which would be the seventh time in the last 10 seasons GB has recorded at least 10 wins at home. The Green and White went undefeated at home (13-0) during the 2017-18 campaign, and has tallied 38 wins at home since the 2022-23 season.
3. IT'S A WIN-WIN
With the victory on January 16 against the Detroit Mercy, Green Bay recorded its 1,100th overall win since the program's inception in 1973. A win over IU Indy (formerly IUPUI) on December 4 gave the Phoenix 450 victories all-time between the program's time in the MCC and Horizon League. GB collected its 461st conference win all-time last Sunday at IU Indy, by far the most in the conference. Milwaukee (276) and Detroit Mercy (274) trail the Phoenix
4. STARTING THE NEW YEAR STRONG
Green Bay polished off an undefeated month of January (9-0), the first perfect January since the 2017-18 season (8- 0). GB won nine games between November and December combined. The Green and White also had three different Players of the Week this past month: Schiltz, (Jan. 6), McNeal (Jan. 13), and most recently Kondrakiewicz (Jan. 27). GB has had five different weeks this season, featuring four different players, where the program represents the Player of the Week. No other team in the HL has more than two (Cleveland State, Purdue Fort Wayne, Detroit Mercy).
5. CAREER-HIGHS FOR KONDRAKIEWICZ
Jasmine Kondrakiewicz leads the team in rebounds, steals, and blocks. 'Jas' became the 40th player in program history to reach 1,000 points in the win over Detroit Mercy on January 16, making a layup with 4:40 remaining in the fourth quarter. She notched her 100th career block on January 2 against Northern Kentucky. Her seven steals against Ripon College in mid-December were a career-high, while also recording her seventh career double-double against Ripon (14 pts., 13 rebs.). GB's win over Wright State on January 4 was the 100th win she's been part of in her career. Against Wright State on Jan. 23, Jasmine racked up a career-high 31 points. Jasmine also has a career-best 75 offensive rebounds and 43 steals, while boasting a career-high in free throw percentage (77.3).
