Guyer's Double-Double Leads Green Bay Past Detroit Mercy 74-53

DETROIT, Mich. -- Jenna Guyer secured a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to help the Green Bay women's basketball team stay unbeaten in conference play, defeating Detroit Mercy 74-53 on the road Saturday afternoon.

In addition to Guyer's strong outing, the Phoenix (13-5, 8-0) was led by Maddy Skorupski, who had 18 points, eight assists, and two steals, and by Gracie Grzesk, who added 11 points coming off the bench.

Green Bay utilized fantastic ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 21 assists on 28 made field goals. Skorupski's eight assists were the most for the Phoenix, and Kamy Peppler also contributed with six assists of her own.

Detroit Mercy (4-12, 2-5) was led by Jasmine Edwards, who had 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Naima Diawara and Makayla Jackson each contributed nine points apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay had a strong first quarter, outscoring Detroit Mercy 17-8, including jumping out to an early 7-0 lead. Guyer and Skorupski each scored five points in the period. The Phoenix expanded its lead to 30-15 after a Guyer three with 4:37 left in the second quarter. Skorupski made a last-second jumper, which gave Green Bay a 37-20 lead going into the locker room.


Green Bay preserved its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Peppler, to expand its lead to 48-28 with 1:53 to go in the third. The Phoenix led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter, but the Titans cut the Phoenix lead to 66-50 with 4:17 to go. However, that was as close as Detroit Mercy came in the quarter. Green Bay followed with an 8-0 run, capped off by Madison Hoffmann's layup, to grow its lead to 74-50 with 54 seconds to go in the contest. The Titans hit a three in the final seconds, sealing the Phoenix victory at 74-53.

» The Green Bay defense forced 15 turnovers.
» Detroit Mercy outrebounded Green Bay 42-39.
» Jenna Guyer racked up her third 20-point game of the season, all of which came against Horizon League opponents in the last five games.

Green Bay returns home for a single home game on Wednesday against Purdue Fort Wayne at 6 p.m. CST. Following Wednesday's game, the Phoenix will travel down to Milwaukee for a road game on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST.
