Phoenix Men Win Eight Events at St. Thomas Tri-Meet

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Green Bay men's swimming and diving team won eight of 16 events Saturday in a season-opening tri-meet with host St. Thomas and Gustavus Adolphus. Max Kasal had a hand in three of those wins, and Stefan Tica swept the distance freestyle events.
The Phoenix women added two event wins, from Rachel Houlgate in the 200 freestyle and Zoe Chalfant in the 200 individual medley, along with six runner-up finishes.
"We had a lot of really awesome swims this first meet," head coach Alex Lewis said. "When you're going into the start of the season, you're really looking for who is doing all the little things right. To see so many best times and high-level performances really helps us set the tone for the season."
"We are a very young team on both sides, so seeing contributions from a lot of new athletes really makes you excited for the season."
The meet also marked a return to competition for five Phoenix swimmers coming off redshirt seasons or injuries. Kasal and Jerett Maalis combined to win four events, including the 200 medley relay they swam together.
Marisol Swenson was third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.22) and swam the butterfly leg on the runner-up 200 medley relay. Hannah Mellock placed fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:24.19), and Eli Zimmerman was seventh in the 50 freestyle (21.70).
