Nathan Halbach Earns Horizon League Sportsmanship Award

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Green Bay Athletics is proud to announce that men's swimmer, Nathan Halbach, has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Horizon League Sportsmanship Award. This accolade recognizes student-athletes who embody the highest standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior during competition, demonstrating values, respect, and integrity. Halbach was also the recipient of the swimming & diving sportsmanship award for the Horizon League earlier this spring.

"We are extremely proud to recognize Nathan Halbach as recipient of this year's Sportsmanship Award," said Horizon League Commissioner Jill Bodensteiner. "His leadership, commitment to serving others, and integrity reflect the very best of college athletics — and are traits that will serve Nathan for life!"

A captain for the Phoenix men's swimming & diving program, Halbach consistently demonstrated leadership both in and out of competition throughout his career. Known for leading by example, he routinely took initiative in ways both visible and behind the scenes, fostering a culture of accountability and respect among teammates.

"Receiving the Horizon League Sportsmanship Award is humbling, and I'm incredibly grateful. This recognition represents something much larger than just myself," said Halbach. "I've been lucky to be surrounded by teammates and coaches who have believed in me, pushed me, and helped me grow throughout my time here. Green Bay Athletics is so special in the fact that they're not just focused on building strong athletes, they're focused on building strong people beyond the sport. And to be part of a community that shows up for the university and supports the teams within it makes this all the more meaningful."

Beyond athletics, Halbach has made a lasting impact throughout the Green Bay community through extensive volunteer work and campus leadership. He has served with organizations including the Optimist Club, The Salvation Army, the Humane Society, and local homeless shelters through his involvement with Green Bay's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

"Nate has been a tremendous leader in our university and athletics department during his time here," added Mark Murphy Endowed Director of Athletics, Josh Moon. "This award is another example of how well rounded he is as a person and a leader. We are excited to watch him excel as he enters the workforce and are proud to now call him a Phoenix alum."

Halbach also served as Student Body President at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, representing the student body with integrity while working to create a positive and inclusive campus environment. This also led to his selection as the UW System student leadership summit representative in 2024.

"Nathan exemplifies leadership, humility, and service," said swimming & diving head coach Alex Lewis. "His commitment to others and the example he sets every day makes him incredibly deserving of this recognition."
