Green Bay Athletics announced the hiring of Andrew Johnson as the next head coach of the Green Bay Phoenix Nordic Ski programs on August 13, 2026.
Johnson brings nearly a decade of coaching, leadership, and program development experience to Green Bay, highlighted by sustained success with the Chippewa Valley Nordic Ski Club, where he has served as head coach, assistant coach, and board president since 2017. During his tenure, the club experienced significant growth and competitive success, producing multiple state championship teams, All-American athletes, and collegiate skiers competing at both the NCAA and USCSA levels.
"We are excited to welcome Andrew to Phoenix Country," said Mark Murphy Endowed Director of Athletics Josh Moon. "Andrew brings great experience from the Chippewa Valley and knows Wisconsin and Minnesota skiing well. He has spent the last decade as a teacher and was a collegiate athlete, so he understands how to grow, develop, and lead a team. He has tremendous energy and passion, and I'm excited to watch this program continue to RISE in the coming years under his leadership."
Under Johnson's leadership, Chippewa Valley Nordic Ski Club grew from 25 to 65 registered athletes while increasing annual fundraising and revenue efforts that expanded the club's operating budget. He also established the organization's first community board and served six years as an officer within the Wisconsin Nordic Ski League.
In addition to his club coaching experience, Johnson has worked extensively with elite junior skiers throughout the Great Lakes region. With Great Lakes Division Nordic, he coached five postseason championship trips, including four Junior Nationals teams and one Canadian Nationals team.
"I am absolutely delighted to be named the next head coach of the Green Bay Nordic ski program," said Johnson. I look forward to working with the athletic department staff and returning skiers to raise the profile of our team, to build a team culture that develops our student-athletes into the best versions of themselves, and ultimately to compete at the highest levels of NCAA skiing. During his coaching career, Johnson was a Social Studies teacher at Wildlands Science Research School. Johnson also played four years of college soccer at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota, as well as a year skiing in 2009-10. He holds a bachelor's degree in Social Studies and Secondary Education from Saint John's and a master's degree in Experiential Education from UW-La Crosse.
Johnson will begin his duties immediately and will oversee all aspects of the Green Bay Nordic Ski program, including recruiting, athlete development, competition preparation, and community engagement.
