GREEN BAY, Wis. - Three members of the Green Bay Phoenix women's
soccer team - junior Chelsea Lyons (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and freshmen Chanel Aries (Calgary, Alberta) and Lauren Somers (Bloomington, Minn.) - have been
recognized as members of the postseason All-Horizon League teams, the league
office announced today. Lyons received first team honors, while Aries and
Somers were named to the league's all-newcomer team.
It marks the third straight year in which Lyons has
received postseason accolades, as she was named to the league's second team a
year ago and the all-newcomer team in 2007. This season, she has been a leader on
the Phoenix defense and has also tallied a goal.
"Chelsea is without doubt one of the best athletes in the
conference," Green Bay head coach Trevor Warren said. "She is able to use that
athletic ability to defend the best strikers in the conference one-on-one. She
is quite formidable at winning balls in the air and because of that she is a
tremendous threat at the other end of the field on set plays."
Both Aries and Somers have started all 17 games for the
Phoenix thus far in their rookie seasons. Aries has been a standout in her
first year in the Green Bay midfield, while Somers has scored three goals and
added an assist as a defender.
"I was very pleased to see Chanel and Lauren voted onto
the all-newcomer team, it is very well deserved," Warren said. "It is not easy
to come in as a freshman and play at the heart of the defense like Lauren did
and likewise the center of midfield in the case of Chanel."
"They both bring a level of maturity to those positions
and they are both very good with the ball at their feet. In addition to Lauren
playing great defense she has also been a scoring threat on set plays. Chanel
is a tireless worker and appears to cover every blade of grass in the defensive
midfield position. She is one of the first names I put on the team sheet every
time we play."
Green Bay (4-10-3, 2-4-2 HL) has earned the No. 6 seed in
the Horizon League Tournament and will head to third-seeded Valparaiso Sunday
at 1 p.m.
