GREEN BAY, Wis. - After
having to reschedule their game due to the amount of rainfall received
throughout the week, the Green Bay men's soccer team didn't let chilly temps
and a little wind keep them from their seventh shut-out of the season.
Green Bay (12-2-2, 5-2-0) limited in-state conference rival
Milwaukee's (3-11-2, 2-4-2) chances of making the post season with a 2-0 win
Saturday at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
"It's great to be undefeated on our home field
this season. We've had a lot of rain over the past few weeks and our facility
maintenance crew, Red and Lyle, did a fantastic job of getting the field ready
to play for tonight," said head coach Tom Poitras.
Green Bay's only goal of the first period came from JC Banks
(Milwaukee, Wis.) who had been in a three game scoring drought. David Znaty
(Hadera, Israel), who was on the right side of the box found Banks in the
middle of the box for his 12th goal of the season.
Banks followed up with his signature back flip as the
Phoenix and Milwaukee both had six shots in the period as Green Bay led 1-0 at
the break.
Nearly half way through the second period AJ Konchar (Cedar
Rapids, Iowa) scored his fourth goal of the season to boost Green Bay's lead
2-0. Konchar was positioned on the left doorstep of the goal when Tyler Rosenberg (Grafton, Wis.) passed to him from outside the top right of the box.
In addition to Rosenberg, Banks also assisted on the goal.
With just over four minutes to play in the game, Znaty's
third shot on the night hit the cross bar and just missed crossing the line for
a goal.
The Phoenix outshot Milwaukee 17-9 and 8-4 on corner kicks.
With the win, Green Bay retains the Chancellor's Cup for the second year in a
row and has outscored their opponents 40-16 with one regular season game to
play.
With Butler's loss at Cleveland State, Green Bay now leads
the conference standings by one point over Cleveland State and will play their
final game of the regular season Saturday, Nov. 7 as they travel to Loyola.
The Horizon League Championship will kick off on Tuesday, Nov.
10 with the first round. The top two seeds will get a first round bye in the
tournament. Semifinal play will be on Nov. 13 followed by the final on Nov. 15.
