GRAND FORKS, N.D. - For
the third time in as many seasons the Green Bay women's basketball team opened
up their regular season on the road with a victory. The 74-56 win ended North
Dakota's 19th consecutive home-opening winning streak.
"To break that streak says a lot about the poise and
confidence of our team, especially because it's such a tough place to play,"
said head coach Matt Bollant.
Green Bay was trailing 8-0 in the first two minutes but
quickly overcame the deficit as four players scored in double figures and shot
92% from the free-throw line.
It were the local De Pere girls who paced the way for the
Phoenix as Heather Golden poured in 16 points and freshman Adrian Ritchie
chipped in 12. Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) had eight assists, grabbed nine rebounds
and was a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line on her way to scoring 11 points for
the Phoenix. In addition, redshirt freshman Stephanie Sension (Hopkins, Minn.) came
off the bench to score 10 in the win.
North Dakota came out in the second half in a 1-2-2 zone but
the poise of Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Celeste Hoewisch's
(Hortonville, Wis.) ability to guard the ball and create five turnovers was key
for the Phoenix.
Green Bay heads south to take on South Dakota on Sunday at 2
