KENT, Ohio (Nov. 14, 2009) - Green Bay (1-1) picked up its first win of the season on Saturday night, downing Samford (0-2) by a 70-68 count in the Hispanic College Fund Classic. Green Bay's four-player guard rotation combined for 56 points to lead the way.
Green Bay was on top for the final 35 minutes of the contest, but had to fend off the Bulldogs, who had the final possession down by just two. Phoenix freshman Seth Evans (Seneca, Ill.), who made one of two from the line with 21 seconds remaining, locked down Samford's Trey Montgomery on the ensuing possession, forcing him to miss a leaning 15-footer from the wing with just two seconds remaining.
Green Bay made 12 of its 21 3-point tries, good for 57 percent, while Samford also was above the 50 percent mark from deep (10-for-19). Both teams were also above 50 percent shooting from the floor. The Phoenix had just four free throw attempts on the night, while Samford had 20.
Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) led the Phoenix with 20 points in just 22 minutes of action after being in foul trouble again. He fouled out with 1:56 left and now has scored 36 points in 37 minutes over two contests.
Troy Cotton (Milwaukee, Wis.) poured in 18 points on 4 of 7 shooting from 3-point range. He scored 10 straight points for the Phoenix in the first half to turn a 21-17 deficit into a 27-21 advantage.
Evans finished with 10 points, while Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) added eight points and seven assists. In the post, Randy Berry (Plover, Wis.) tacked on eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Phoenix plays its third of four games in the tournament on Sunday afternoon (4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT) against host school Kent State.
