VERMILLION, S.D. - For
the second consecutive season the Green Bay (2-0) women's basketball team
opened their season with two road wins. The Phoenix beat the University of South
Dakota (0-1) 53-40 in the first ever meeting between the two teams.
"Anytime you win on the road is great, especially against
two teams that are tough to battle on their home floor," said head coach Matt Bollant.
Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) got into foul trouble in
the first four minutes of the game but put up her first career double-double
scoring ten points and ten rebounds in 23 minutes of play.
Green Bay was led in scoring by Heather Golden (De Pere,
Wis.) who had 14 points and Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) who had 13.
"I thought Celeste played with great confidence on both ends
of the floor," said Bollant.
The Phoenix started off slow until Stephanie Sension
(Hopkins, Minn.) came off the bench to hit a big three for Green Bay. The
Phoenix struggled offensively shooting 40% from the floor but forced the
Coyotes to turn the ball over 20 times.
Green Bay will host Florida International Sat. at 7 p.m. in
their home opener. The Phoenix have not lost a home opener since 1999, "it's a
great way to start off the season with two big wins on the road but we're looking
forward to playing in front of our fans at home," said Bollant.
