GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay Phoenix (4-1) edged Northern Michigan (0-2) by a 70-64 count Wednesday night in its home opener at the Resch Center. Green Bay was playing its fifth game in six days, and in the process became the first Division I team in the country to play five games this season.
Neither team led by double digits in the contest, and the final score was Green Bay's largest lead of the game. The score was tied, 32-32, at intermission.
Rahmon Fletcher's 3-pointer from the right corner with 2:29 remaining gave the Phoenix a 3-point advantage, 63-60, and Green Bay never lost the lead.
The Phoenix made just 13 of 29 free throw tries on the night, while Northern Michigan was 3 of 8 from the charity stripe.
Fletcher and Troy Cotton each tallied 19 points to lead Green Bay, while Randy Berry had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Marc Renelique scored 23 on 7 of 10 shooting from 3-point range, and tacked on eight boards, to lead the Wildcats.
Green Bay is 4-1 for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign. The Phoenix is next in action Saturday at 1 p.m. against Long Beach State at the Resch Center.
