EVANSVILLE, Ind. - For the second time in the history of the program, the Green Bay women's basketball team is off to a 9-0 start after handling Evansville University (2-7) with an 83-37 win.
After coming up empty-handed on their first three possessions Green Bay managed to put together an 8-0 run as Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) scored 11 points in a 12 minute span.
On the defensive side of the ball the Phoenix had nine steals in the first half, forcing Evansville to turn the ball over 18 times and capitalizing with 19 points off the miscues.
Green Bay built their largest lead of the half (16) with under eight minutes to play, scoring nine points off offensive rebounding thanks in part to Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) and Tetschlag who led the way grabbing four a piece, "Adrian really gave us energy offensively when we needed it; she was huge on the boards and in scoring while Kayla made it look easy in the post," said head coach Matt Bollant.
After leading 41-21 at the break with three players (Tetschlag, Ritchie, Wojta) scoring in double figures, Green Bay's dominance continued into the second half. For the second time this season Green Bay held an opponent to 16 points in a half while building their largest lead (46) of the season. In addition Evansville's 37 points was the fewest allowed by Green Bay this season.
Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) and Tetschlag led all scorers with 19 points while freshman Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) had a career-game scoring 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds, "we always tell our players we're not going to drop off when we rotate and they did a great job on the boards; I was really proud of them," said Bollant.
The Phoenix will enjoy a week of rest as they prepare to host in-state rival Marquette on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Kress Events Center. With a win against Marquette, the Phoenix will become the first team in the history of the women's basketball program to begin the season with a 10-0 record.
