ATHENS, Greece - -
The Green Bay women's basketball team registered its third win of its four-game tour through Athens, Greece Monday with its 68-59 win over the Hellenic Basketball Federation's U-24 women's team. The contest was the second in as many days against the U-24 national team for the Phoenix.
Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) led Green Bay with 12 points while Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) had seven of her 10 points in the first half to also tally double figures. Tetschlag's game-high 12 rebounds gave the junior-to-be a double-double in 30 minutes of play.
Unlike Sunday's game, Greece stayed close with the Phoenix early on, taking a one-point lead in the first quarter with just over three minutes to go. The Phoenix led most of the first half, but never had more than a nine-point advantage in the first two quarters.
The Greeks pulled to within four, 41-37, on a three-pointer with 2:52 to go in the third period. But Green Bay answered with an 11-2 run to close the quarter, which was capped by a baseline three-pointer by Chelsea Lyons (Coon Rapids, Minn.) to give the Phoenix a 52-39 lead.
From there, Greece never got closer than five points as the Phoenix held on for the win. Timely free throw shooting helped Green Bay in the second half; the Phoenix shot 80 percent (12-of-15) from the line.
All 11 players found the scoring column for the Phoenix. Green Bay also cut down its turnovers from the night previous, committing just 16 miscues in the contest. Green Bay's defense came up with 13 steals, including three apiece by Lyons and Tetschlag, and out-rebounded Greece 38-32.
Green Bay concludes the competition portion of its foreign tour Wednesday night against a club team yet to be determined.
