WATERLOO, Iowa - The Green Bay women's soccer team (1-1-0)
claimed its first victory of the 2009 season Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win
over Northern Iowa (1-2-0) at the Cedar Valley Youth Soccer Complex. With the
win, the Phoenix improves to 6-2-0 all time against the Panthers.
"I'm really happy with how we played today," head coach
Trevor Warren said. "We controlled the game, the time of possession and the
shots on goal. The girls definitely deserved the win."
Despite an 8-1 shot advantage in the opening period for
the Phoenix, the score was knotted at 0-0 at halftime.
The Phoenix got on the board first in the 57th
minute when junior forward Chelsea Lyons (Coon Rapids, Minn.) buried a header
off a corner kick. Sophomore Jess Ruch (Fond du Lac, Wis.) assisted on the team's
first goal of the season.
The Panthers responded in the 76th minute and evened
the score at 1-1 when sophomore forward Ashley Sill slipped a goal past
Phoenix keeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) from right side. It was one of
just two shots on goal by UNI in the match.
Sophomore midfielder Corey Arno (Winneconne, Wis.) netted
the game winner for the Phoenix late in the contest as freshman Molly Haertle
(Oconomowoc, Wis.) tallied her first collegiate assist. Haertle found Arno in
the 85th minute after a rebound off a corner kick.
It was a clean contest, as Green Bay committed just two
fouls while UNI had six. The Phoenix out-shot the Panthers 15-6 in the match,
forcing Panther goalkeeper Lauren Potzman to make five saves on the afternoon.
Green Bay continues its road trip this Friday when it
travels to Brookings, S.D., to take on South Dakota State at 6 p.m. CT.
