INDIANAPOLIS - The Green Bay women's soccer team (2-7-2,
0-2-1 Horizon League) was defeated 3-0 Sunday afternoon by conference rival
Butler (5-7-0, 1-1-0 Horizon League) at the Butler Bowl. The Bulldogs scored all
three of their goals in the second period to pull away for the win in their
league opener.
Two of Butler's goals came courtesy of senior midfielder
Molly Kruger, who netted her third and fourth goals of the season. Kruger's
first goal of the afternoon came in the 51st minute off a pass from senior forward
Lindsey Fox. Fox found her classmate down the right sideline, who fired a shot
that ricocheted off the near post and into the net.
Kruger's second goal occurred in the 77th minute after
she beat a defender and struck the net from point blank range on a feed from
freshman forward Katie Griswold. Fox also scored for the Bulldogs on the
afternoon, finding the goal in the 70th minute after a cross from Carrie
Twyman.
Green Bay trailed in the shot column 19-8 in the contest,
as freshman Molly Haertle (Oconomowoc, Wis.) led the Phoenix with a pair of
shots on goal.
Phoenix goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) made
five saves in the match and allowed all three goals. Freshman Aliena Debelak
(New Brighton, Minn.) also saw action between the posts, recording one save in
12 minutes.
Green Bay returns to action this Friday when it travels
to Lincoln, Neb., to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 4 p.m. The Phoenix
then returns to Santaga Stadium for a three-match Horizon League home stand,
starting Oct. 9 against Youngstown State.
