AMES, Iowa - The Green Bay women's soccer team (1-3-0)
suffered a tough, 2-1 loss to Iowa State at the ISU Soccer Complex Sunday
afternoon in the first ever meeting between the two schools. More than 84
minutes separated ISU's two goals in the match as the Cyclones got on the board
early, then found the net late for the game-winner to improve to 3-0-2 on the
year.
ISU senior Lauren Fader scored her first goal of the
season just over a minute into the contest on a header off a long free kick from
classmate Elisa Berzins. The Cyclones took a 1-0 lead into halftime after
outshooting the Phoenix 10-4 in the opening period.
Green Bay knotted the score in the 78th minute on a close
shot from the right side by freshman forward Nicole Dooher (New Hope, Minn.). Sophomore
Corey Arno (Winneconne, Wis.) registered her first assist on the young season,
finding Dooher for her first collegiate goal.
With the score tied at 1-1 and overtime looming, ISU senior
forward Amanda Nimtz beat two Phoenix defenders in the 86th minute and struck a
far-post drive past Green Bay goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) into
the upper corner of the goal. The Phoenix was able to get off two more shots in
the final minutes, but couldn't find the net to force overtime.
The Cyclones held a 20-8 shot advantage in the contest,
including a 12-4 margin in shots on goal. Drusch made a season-high 10 saves in
the match, while Dooher had a team-high three shots on the offensive end.
The Phoenix wraps up its five-game road trip this
Thursday against in-state rival Marquette in a match that will be televised
live on Time Warner Sports 32. Green Bay then returns to Santaga Stadium Sept. 13 for its
long-awaited home opener against North Dakota State at 1 p.m.
