Green Bay rolls through Michigan picking up their second win

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Green Bay (2-0-1) men's soccer team continued rolling along on the road as they picked up their second win of the season beating Western Michigan (0-2-0) by a final of 5-1.

"Our guys handled this first road trip really well. Its been a very positive start to the season," said head coach Tom Poitras.

Less than 16 minutes into the contest, Green Bay jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to the foot of David Znaty (Hadera, Israel) who scored off a direct free kick just outside the penalty box.

Western Michigan answered half way through the period off a header by Saeed Baba Sulemana on a long cross kick to tie it up at 1-1. From that point on, it was all Green Bay.

Junior JC Banks (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored his third goal of the season off a pass from Stuart Grable (Neenah, Wis.) to increase Green Bay's lead 2-1.

The Phoenix was not done for the half. With less than 15 seconds to play, AJ Konchar (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) scored off a give and go from Dan Krueger (Fridley, Minn.) to give Green Bay a comfortable 3-1 lead at intermission.

The Phoenix was solid in the first half taking 11 shots compared to the Broncos six. Green Bay also dominated on corner kicks 6-0.

With less than 20 minutes to play in the second period, Banks scored again off a pass from Tony Walls (Wauwatosa, Wis.) off a throw-in from Andrew Stone (Green Bay, Wis.) boosting Green Bay's lead 4-1.

Green Bay's fifth and final goal came with just over three minutes left in the match when Alonso Flores (Chicago, Ill.) found Casey Berg (Janesville, Wis.) in the middle of the box.

The Phoenix finished the game with 17 shots compared to Western Michigan's 9 while Phoenix goalie Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) had three saves.

Green Bay will have a few days to relish their fast start to the season before heading to Pittsburgh later this week. The Phoenix looks for its third straight road win of the season as they take on Pittsburgh (1-2-0) at 6p.m. Friday followed by Robert Morris on Sunday at noon.
