No. 18/20 Green Bay Improves to 2-0 in Horizon League Play

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The No. 18/20 Green Bay (13-0, 2-0) women's basketball team wrapped up their conference opening road trip with a 76-60 win at Youngstown State (0-13, 0-2).

The Penguins had their share of leads in the first half. At the half way mark the Penguins took a 17-16 lead with a three-pointer by Bojana Dimitrov. With 7:36 to play Youngstown State led 22-20 before the Phoenix tied it up. At the 6:19 mark the Penguins led 24-22 before leading by as many as six with 5:11 to play in the half.

For the first time since the 8:40 mark with 1:47 to play in the first half, Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) made a three to break the 28-28 tie. After a Youngstown foul on the play Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) drained a three as Green Bay went on a 10-0 run to lead 38-28 at the break.

"We knew we had to get a run heading into halftime and things finally just started coming together for us," said Heather Golden.

Green Bay's defense came to life as they forced the Penguins to turn the ball over 10 times in the last 3:27 of the first half. Horizon League Player of the Week Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Hoewisch combined for 25 points and six rebounds in the first half of action.

In the second half Heather Golden (De Pere, Wis.) gave Green Bay a spark pouring in 11 points shooting 3/7 from three-point range as part of a 14-0 run. "When that first three went in, it was a huge sigh of relief; I just thought 'they do still go in,'" said Golden. On the defensive side of the ball Green Bay held the Penguins scoreless for over six minutes.

Tetschlag led all scorers with 17 points while Hoewisch and Golden each chipped in 13 for the Phoenix. Wojta led all players with seven assists and four steals as four players scored in double figures for Green Bay (Tetschlag-17, Hoewisch-13, Golden-13, Ritchie-10).

Youngstown State shot a season best 50.0 percent while Green Bay gave up 60 points, "We are not happy where we are at defensively as a team right now," said Golden. The last time Youngstown State shot over 50 percent was Feb. 16, 2006 at Green Bay.

Green Bay will return to the confines of the Kress Center Thursday, Jan. 7 as they will host Wright State in their conference home-opener at 7 p.m. followed by Detroit on Saturday at 2 p.m.
