YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The No. 18/20 Green
Bay (13-0, 2-0) women's basketball team wrapped up their conference opening road
trip with a 76-60 win at Youngstown State (0-13, 0-2).
The Penguins
had their share of leads in the first half. At the half way mark the Penguins
took a 17-16 lead with a three-pointer by Bojana Dimitrov. With 7:36 to play
Youngstown State led 22-20 before the Phoenix tied it up. At the 6:19 mark the
Penguins led 24-22 before leading by as many as six with 5:11 to play in the
half.
For the
first time since the 8:40 mark with 1:47 to play in the first half, Julie Wojta
(Mishicot, Wis.) made a three to break the 28-28 tie. After a Youngstown foul
on the play Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) drained a three as Green Bay
went on a 10-0 run to lead 38-28 at the break.
"We knew we
had to get a run heading into halftime and things finally just started coming
together for us," said Heather Golden.
Green Bay's
defense came to life as they forced the Penguins to turn the ball over 10 times
in the last 3:27 of the first half. Horizon League Player of the Week Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Hoewisch combined for 25 points and six
rebounds in the first half of action.
In the
second half Heather Golden (De Pere, Wis.) gave Green Bay a spark pouring in 11
points shooting 3/7 from three-point range as part of a 14-0 run. "When that
first three went in, it was a huge sigh of relief; I just thought 'they do
still go in,'" said Golden. On the defensive side of the ball Green Bay held
the Penguins scoreless for over six minutes.
Tetschlag
led all scorers with 17 points while Hoewisch and Golden each chipped in 13 for
the Phoenix. Wojta led all players with seven assists and four steals as four
players scored in double figures for Green Bay (Tetschlag-17, Hoewisch-13,
Golden-13, Ritchie-10).
Youngstown
State shot a season best 50.0 percent while Green Bay gave up 60 points, "We
are not happy where we are at defensively as a team right now," said Golden. The
last time Youngstown State shot over 50 percent was Feb. 16, 2006 at Green Bay.
Green Bay
will return to the confines of the Kress Center Thursday, Jan. 7 as they will
host Wright State in their conference home-opener at 7 p.m. followed by Detroit
on Saturday at 2 p.m.
