GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay junior goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) has been named the Horizon League
Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the month of September. She becomes the first
Green Bay women's soccer athlete in the program's history to earn the award.
"I'm very pleased for
Maddie that she received this recognition," Green Bay head coach Trevor Warren said. "It's a credit
not only to her performance on the field, but off the field as well. She's a
tremendous student who works very hard in the classroom, and statistically she
has been one of the top goalkeepers in the country. She's a real bright spot
for our program, the department and the university."
On
the field, Drusch has ranked among the nation's best in several goalkeeping
categories throughout the 2010 season. The junior ranked 10th in the NCAA in
save percentage (.902) at September's end, and also earned Green Bay the first
place Division I ranking with a .933 save percentage in the stats released
Sept. 19. Overall in the Horizon League, Drusch is ranked first in save
percentage and leads the conference in goals-against average (0.73). She
surrendered only six goals through the month of September, allowing no more
than one goal in any game.
In
the classroom, Drusch earned a 4.0 grade-point average in the spring of 2010,
taking on a total of 17 credit hours. She was also named to the spring 2010
Horizon League Academic Honor Roll for her academic standing. Drusch helped her
team win the award of National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Team
Academic Award last season. She has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.7 in
her academic career. The junior is majoring in elementary education.
The
Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to
recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its
student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must
maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale),
have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester
or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the month's competition.
Winners are selected by the League's faculty athletics representatives, from
nominations provided by sports information directors.
