GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Despite a slow start, the Green Bay women's
basketball team beat UW-Stevens Point 76-39 in its final exhibition game
Saturday at the Kress Events Center.
Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) led all scorers with 17
points while Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.)
also posted double figures each scoring 13 for the Phoenix. Defensively Hannah
Quilling (Eau Claire, Wis.) led all players with six steals in Green Bay's
final tune-up before regular season play.
After leading 7-4 through the first four minutes of play,
Green Bay went 0-7 from the field allowing the Pointers to take an 8-7 lead. "I
was thoroughly disappointed in our lack of energy," said head coach Matt
Bollant.
Following a media timeout at 11:51, Green Bay went on a 16-2
run sparked by Quilling who had three steals, three assists and two points
during that time.
"Hannah brought such great energy. As poorly as we played
the first half, Hannah was a huge part of our success today," said Bollant.
Green Bay led 36-20 at the break shooting 38.5 percent from
the field with Ritchie leading the way with 12 and Tetschlag chipping in 11.
"I told our team at half time we should've been down with
our lack of being on edge they showed on the court," said Bollant. "However
when we came out in the second half, I felt we were a different team in the
first ten minutes. We came out with a lot of energy and fight which made me
proud of the way we played," added Bollant.
Green Bay started the second half on an 18-2 run and held
the Pointers scoreless throughout the first 10 minutes in the half. The Phoenix
shot 55.6 percent from the field in the half and 72.7 percent from the
free-throw line as sophomore Breannah Ranger (Skokie, Ill.) came off the bench
scoring six points in 11 minutes to lead her team in the half.
The Phoenix will hit the road to tip off regular-season play
with a pair of games featuring George Washington on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 3:30
p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14 Green Bay will play either Northern Illinois or Minnesota.
The games are part of the Best Buy Classic hosted by University of Minnesota.
