Slow Start Causes Green Bay's First Loss of the Season

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Despite starting the second half on a 12-2 run, the No. 23/17 Green Bay (9-1) women's basketball team fell 63-60 to Marquette (8-2, 0-1) Sunday at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee. The Phoenix had its 17-game regular-season winning streak snapped after a slow start against the Golden Eagles.

"We just put ourselves in a hole early on and let them get the open looks, which hurt our confidence," said  Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) who led all players with 17 points.

Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) and Tetschlag both posted double-doubles as the Phoenix tried to overcome a 36-23 halftime deficit. Tetschlag grabbed 11 rebounds while Wojta had a game-high 11 boards while chipping in 16 points.

Marquette opened the game with two three pointers before Tetschlag scored Green Bay's first bucket three minutes into the contest.

"We just weren't ready to move our feet and didn't have the edge that we normally do," said head coach Matt Bollant. "We gave up too many open shots like the three-pointers in the first couple of minutes and dug ourselves a hole."

Green Bay broke Marquette's 12-2 run at the 14:45 mark with a layup from Wojta followed by a three pointer from Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.), cutting the Golden Eagles' lead to five.

Marquette went on a 10-0 run, expanding its lead to 15 (22-7) with 6:45 remaining in the first half. Green Bay came as close as nine (30-21) with 2:26 to play when Hoewisch sank a three from the right corner. The Phoenix applied full court pressure before suffering its first halftime deficit of the season, 36-23.

For the second time this season the Phoenix turned the ball over a season-high 14 times in the first half as Marquette capitalized with 12 points off Green Bay's miscues. The Phoenix shot a season worst 30 percent throughout the first half of play.

Green Bay opened the second half scoring the first seven points, which was part of a 12-2 run sparked by Wojta and Tetschlag.

"I was really happy to see Kayla's fight, she played like the girl we saw a lot last year," Bollant said. "She really did everything she could to keep us from losing the game."

The Phoenix came within three before turning the ball over and allowing Tatiyiana McMorris to sink a three from the left arc (47-41). The Golden Eagles hit another three as part of its 8-0 run before expanding its lead to 11 (54-43) with 7:14 to play.

Trailing 58-49, Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) found Wojta underneath the bucket for two of her 14 second-half points cutting Marquette's lead to seven with 3:27 remaining. Tetschlag forced a turnover on the defensive end, drew a foul and sank both of her FT attempts while closing the gap to five with just under three minutes to play.

With one minute remaining, down 61-56, Wojta scored Green Bay's next four points before fouling out. With 14.1 seconds to play, Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis.) drove the lane scoring two of her five points while cutting Marquette's lead to two (60-62). Ritchie's three-point attempt from the right wing with three seconds left bounced off the front of the rim as the Phoenix were handed its first loss of the season.

"We learned that we need to come and play every night," said Tetschlag. "We didn't come out ready tonight and we haven't done so as of late so it's a good wake-up call in that aspect."

Green Bay finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field and 35 percent from beyond the arc while scoring 34 points in the paint. The Phoenix outrebounded Marquette 36-26, scoring 11 second-chance points.

The Phoenix tips off a four-game homestand at the Kress Events Center starting with Evansville Saturday, Dec. 18 at 2 p.m.
