Phoenix Post Two Shut-outs In Rebel Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - After falling 2-3 to LaSalle in the opening round of the Rebel Spring Games held in Florida, the Green Bay (5-2) women's softball team had two shut-outs in the second day of competition.

The Phoenix shut-out St. Peters University 5-0 Sunday thanks to freshman Lauren Beres (New Berlin, Wis.) who pitched a complete game. Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) started the scoring for Green Bay with a solo home run in the second inning to make it 1-0. In the fourth Kendra Woepse (Manitowoc, Wis.) had an RBI double to boost Green Bay's lead 2-0.

Sara Junion (Sevastopol, Wis.) had an RBI double in the fifth to boost Green Bay's lead to 3-0. After hitting a single in the fourth, Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) hit an RBI double in the fifth securing the 5-0 victory for the Phoenix. Rivera led the Phoenix from the plate with two RBIs while Peerenboom, Junion and Woepse each added one.

The Phoenix carried their momentum into a late morning match-up with Florida A&M shutting out the Rattlers 4-0. This time it was Junior Samantha Schmeltzer (Merrill, Wis.) who pitched a complete game for the Phoenix.

It was scoreless in the fifth inning until Woepse hit a two-run homer putting the Phoenix on the board with the 2-0 lead. In the sixth inning Krissy Hanson (Appleton North, Wis.) hit a solo home run over the right field fence to boost Green Bay's lead to 3-0.

Green Bay finished off their scoring with an error from the Rattlers in the seventh when Woepse hit the ball to the short stop scoring Rivera from first. Woepse finished the game with two RBIs while Hanson chipped in one.

The Phoenix will have an early start to its Monday as they take on Akron at 9:00 a.m. followed by Rider at 11:00 a.m.
