YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Green Bay softball team's season came to an end Saturday afternoon, as the team fell to No. 3 Robert Morris in nine innings, 6-5. The Phoenix finished third in the #HLSB Championships.
Green Bay received three Horizon League All-Tournament Team selections for outstanding performance throughout the week. The three to receive the honor were Sidney LaMotte, Emily Jones, and Ava Schill. LaMotte finished the #HLSB Championships hitting .400, to go with an OBP of .438, a slugging percentage of 1.133. LaMotte also hit three home runs and two doubles, driving in eight runs across four games. Jones finished the week with a slash line of .333/.471/.1.000, homering twice and doubling twice while driving in six. Ava Schill was the main out-getter for GB in the tournament, pitching 18.2 innings with a 3.37 ERA.
Ava Schill (7-7) took the loss in the circle for Green Bay, pitching 3.2 innings of one-run ball. Paeton Kringel started the game, going 4.2 innings. Kringel pitched four scoreless innings to start before the Colonials broke the game open in the fifth.
Offensively, the Phoenix was paced by Emily Jones, who went 1-for-4 with a two-out seventh inning solo home run that tied the game at five and extended the game to extra innings. Emma Krueger also went 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Bella Herman and Jenna Redders were the two Phoenix with multiple hits. Herman went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, and Redders went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning with some smallball. Paige Gues reached on an error that scored a run, followed up by a bases loaded hit-by-pitch that gave Sidney LaMotte an RBI.
The Phoenix then held the Colonials scoreless before getting back on the board in the fourth. Krueger started the scoring off with a solo shot before Herman doubled home Redders to make it 4-0.
RMU hung up five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to turn the game on its head. That score held until Jones' clutch homer tied the game up. Neither team scored until the ninth inning when the Colonials' Aglaia Rudd singled home the winning run.
