LaMotte, Schill Lead Phoenix Past No. 1 Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Sidney LaMotte's two-run blast secured a 2-0 victory for the Green Bay Phoenix softball team over the top-seeded Youngstown State Penguins on Thursday.

Ava Schill (7-5) started in the circle and picked up the win for Green Bay (16-29). The right-hander pitched a complete game shutout while giving up nine hits, allowing no walks, and striking out one.

With the win, Green Bay has clinched a top-three finish in the Horizon League Championships for the first time since winning the championship in 2014 over Valparaiso.

The Phoenix is set to take on No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky for a spot in the Horizon League Championship tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. CST.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Youngstown State threatened to score, but multiple defensive stands from Green Bay kept the game scoreless. In the top of the seventh, Gracie Anderson started the inning with a single to center. Grace Kahr pinch ran and advanced to second on a ball in the dirt. Then, with Kahr on second, LaMotte hit her third home run of the #HLSB Championships, a line drive to left that broke the deadlock.

Schill retired the Penguins lineup in order in the bottom half and secured her second complete game shutout of the season. Today was the first time YSU scored no runs against a league opponent this season.
