GREEN BAY, Wis. - The
Green Bay (25-3, 14-3) women's basketball team won at least a share of their 12th
consecutive regular season conference title by defeating Youngstown State
(0-28, 0-17) 84-45.
"It's really a sense of pride to be part of something
special here at Green Bay; everyone on this team knows how important the
winning tradition is," said Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) who finished with
seven points.
Green Bay jumped out to an aggressive 14-0 lead and didn't
miss a field goal until the 14:22 mark in the first half. The Phoenix finished
the half shooting 66.7 percent, building their largest halftime lead of the
season (50-15).
Junior Heather Golden (De Pere, Wis.) led all scorers with
15 points shooting a perfect 6-6 from the field and 3-3 from three-point range,
"I just felt really confident and relaxed tonight as opposed to being so tense,"
said Golden.
Four players scored in double figures for the Phoenix
including freshman Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis.) who had a career high 14 while
Morgan Faase (Green Bay Wis.) also had a career high 13 points in 14 minutes of
play.
"I was so thrilled for Morgan, she's got such a great spirit
and I told her earlier this week everyone contributes to this team's success so
it was really great to see her have such a great game tonight," said head coach
Matt Bollant.
Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) also chipped in 10
points and led all players with five assists and three steals. In addition, as a team Green Bay set a Kress Center record with 25 assists.
Green Bay will wrap up their regular season Saturday as they
host Cleveland State at 2 p.m. The
Phoenix will remain at home for the Speedway Horizon League Championship which
tips off with a quarterfinal game at 7:00 Wednesday, March 10. Semifinal action
will be held Friday, March 12 at 5:30 and 8:00 with Sunday's championship game
at noon.
