June 14, 2010 - In
a quest for its second consecutive Horizon League championship and NCAA
tournament berth, the Green Bay men's soccer team released its 2010 schedule
today.
"The schedule we set for our players definitely provides a
high caliber of competition in order to prepare our team for the tough Horizon
League," said head coach Tom Poitras.
The Phoenix will have a tough non-conference schedule to
help prepare them for Horizon League competition. Green Bay will host DePaul in
its season opener Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
Three days later on Sept. 4 PAC-10 runner-up Oregon State
will be Green Bay's featured opponent at Aldo Santaga Stadium at 7 p.m. Oregon
State has a history of producing quality soccer players as the Beavers' Danny
Mwanga was the number one overall pick in the 2010 MLS draft while Robbie
Findley is currently playing on the U.S. National team in World Cup
competition.
A pair of 2009 NCAA tournament teams will meet at 7:30 p.m.
Sept. 10 as Green Bay will travel south to take on Missouri State in its first
road match against the Missouri Valley Conference champions.
After a year absence, the Green Bay Soccer Classic returns
to the field beginning Sept. 17 with Robert Morris and Western Michigan kicking
things off at 4:30 p.m. followed by UNLV and Green Bay at approximately 7:00
p.m. The Phoenix will close the Classic Sept. 19 at 2:30 against Western
Michigan.
A re-match from last season's Horizon League Championship
game will take place during alumni weekend Friday, Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m. as
Green Bay hosts regular season League champion Butler to kick off Horizon
League play. Sept. 26 the Bradley Braves will be in town for a matinee meeting
at 1:00 p.m. before Green Bay hits the road for a five game stretch.
Green Bay will hit the road to Cleveland State Oct. 1
followed by Detroit Oct. 3. In-state Horizon League rival UW-Milwaukee will
host the Phoenix Oct. 9. After Green Bay beat UIC 3-2 in an exciting
double-overtime game last season, the Phoenix will have to play on the Flames
field as UIC hosts Green Bay Oct. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
The Phoenix will wrap up its road stretch with an always
anticipating game against in-state rival Wisconsin Oct. 20 at 7:00 p.m. in
Madison.
"The five consecutive away matches will challenge our team
and will help answer some Horizon League questions for us with playing all four
of our League away matches during this stretch," said Poitras.
Green Bay's toughest loss during the 2009 campaign came at
Valparaiso in a 2-3 overtime battle in the middle of October. This year, same
time, different place as Green Bay will try to avenge the Crusaders Saturday,
October 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Western Illinois University will host Green Bay in a
non-conference game Oct. 26 at 3:00 p.m. before the Phoenix wraps up regular
season play with two League home games. Loyola will be in town Oct. 30 followed
by Wright State Nov. 6 at 2:00 p.m.
The top six teams in the final regular season Horizon League
standings will play in the League tournament with the first round kicking off
Tuesday, Nov. 9.
