IOWA CITY, Ia. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
- Senior Whitney Schott (Roscoe, Ill.) tallied
23 assists and earned a spot on the Hawkeye Challenge All-Tournament team on
Sunday, but visiting Green Bay (0-3) was unable to knock off Iowa (3-0), falling
to the host Hawkeyes 25-19, 25-12, 25-22 in non-conference volleyball.
"I'm not much for moral victories, but our ball control and
chemistry on the court was better," said head coach Debbie Kirch. "The key for us will be to start on Friday (at Drake)
where we left off today and keep moving forward."
Schott, the lone senior on a young Phoenix squad, earned a
spot on the all-tournament team after totaling 61 assists and three service
aces during the weekend.
"Whitney played like a senior all weekend," said
Kirch. "If her leadership and composure rubs off on the rest of the team,
things will come together quickly."
On Sunday, Green Bay played its most complete
match against the weekend's best competition. Junior Abbey Gitter
(Hortonville, Wis.) paced the Phoenix with eight kills while sophomore Carmen Lietermann (Schofield, Wis.) had
her best game of the weekend with seven kills.
The Green Bay defense was strong Sunday, limiting
Iowa to a .250 hitting percentage and having four players total 10 or more
digs. Freshman Kara Lindstedt
(Shoreview, Minn.) led the way with 15 digs.
One of seven freshmen on the Phoenix roster, Monica Anderson (Cottage Grove, Wis.)
had five kills Sunday and finished her first weekend of collegiate volleyball
with a team-high 23 kills.
Continuing an opening stretch of 12-straight
games away from the Kress Center, Green Bay returns to action Friday in Des
Moines, Ia., at the Drake Invite against the host Bulldogs.
