GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Freshman Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) had 12 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots to
break the program's single-season blocked shots record Friday night, but
visiting Wright State (14-8, 7-3 HL) rallied from a late deficit to stun Green
Bay (11-11, 5-5 HL) and a Throwback Night crowd at the Resch Center.
Neither
team led by more than seven points throughout a back-and-forth affair which
featured 11 lead changes. After trailing by six with less than eight minutes to
play, Green Bay capped an 8-0 run with a Jarvis Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.) layup with 5:20 to take a 52-50 lead.
Another
Williams layup at the 2:06 mark gave Green Bay a 61-55 lead, but the Phoenix
did not score again as the Raiders used a pair of threes to tie the score.
After a Brown miss in the lane with 23 seconds to play, WSU's N'Gai Evans
scored the game-winner on a layup with 4.3 seconds to play.
Senior
Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.)
had his long three-point attempt that would have given the Phoenix the victory
hit off the back of the rim at the buzzer. Fletcher finished with 12 points for
Green Bay while Williams added 11 as the team's third scorer in double figures.
The
Phoenix built a 31-26 halftime lead after ending the first 20 minutes on a 13-4
run. Brown had six points, five rebounds and five blocked shots in 18
first-half minutes. He helped the hosts have a 16-6 edge in points in the
paint. Brown's five early blocks helped him break the school's single-season
record. With 50 blocks on the year, he now holds the team's record for blocks
in a game, blocks by a freshman and blocks in a season.
"I
did not think he would do it this quick, but Alec is a very bright player who
is getting better every game," said head coach Brian Wardle. "I was
able to play him a lot of minutes today because he was out of foul trouble.
When he plays a lot of minutes, he is a presence. We just have to keep building
on what he is doing."
Wright
State opened the second half on a 10-2 run before back-to-back threes from
freshman Kam Cerroni (Sussex, Wis.)
put the Phoenix back on top 39-36 at the 14:26 mark.
Green
Bay turned the ball over four times over the next seven minutes, helping the
Raiders turn the deficit into a six-point edge.
"It
was a tough game. Any time you are in a low possession game, you have to take
care of the ball, and that is something we have not been doing," said Wardle.
"We will have to make some corrections because that hurt us tonight.
Green
Bay will look to bounce back on Sunday, hosting Detroit at 1 p.m. at the Resch
Center.
