Frontline Leads Phoenix to 77-61 Victory

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Junior Jarvis Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.) is turning himself into a consistent scoring threat for Green Bay. For the third-straight game, Williams reached double figures for the Phoenix, scoring 13 in the first half to lead Green Bay (7-9) to a 38-23 halftime lead and finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds in a 77-61 victory over visiting Houston Baptist (1-11) Monday night at the Resch Center.

Williams was not alone along the frontline in producing for Green Bay. Freshman Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half and added a career-high 10 rebounds, and fellow freshman Daniel Turner (McCordsville, Ind.) had 14 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

The frontline dominance helped the Phoenix to a 48-28 edge on the glass, a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint and a 22-9 margin in second-chance points. The Horizon League's top rebounding team grabbed 23 of its 48 rebounds on the offensive end.

"I love how we're rebounding. We're playing a little bit bigger which I'm happy about. We're pounding people on the glass," said head coach Brian Wardle. "In that locker room, when we talk about rebounding they grin because they know we've got it right now. They enjoy it. They love it. It's a sign of toughness, but now we've got to do more with it. It's something that we're going to continue to build on and hopefully we can keep it going."

Brown flushed down a dunk just five seconds into the game and the Phoenix never trailed. Williams hit 4-of-8 shots from the field and grabbed seven rebounds in the opening half as the Phoenix built a 38-23 advantage at the break.

"In the first half we really played hard and played with effort, but we just missed a bunch of shots," said Wardle. "We came out a little sluggish, but Eric Valentin, our walk-on, was the MVP of the game tonight. He came out and just energized our bench, the crowd and the whole game. The team was fired up for him."

Valentin, a 5-foot-4 walk-on from Oviedo, Fla., came in at the 14:39 point of the second half when the lead was cut to 12. He found Brown down low which led to a free throw, made a steal on the other end and got Brown a dunk in the lane with a wrap around feed in the paint. He then finished with a runner in the lane, and his two free throws at the 11:53 mark gave the Phoenix a 16-point edge. Valentin finished four points, an assist and a steal in three minutes.

The advantage grew to as many as 20 on a Brown jumper with 7:09 remaining, and the Phoenix polished off a win to end a two-game slide. Senior Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) scored all 14 of his points in the second half.

Green Bay will return to Horizon League action on Saturday, hosting Milwaukee at 7 p.m.
