YOUNGSTOWN,
Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For the second consecutive game, Julie
Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) led No. 20
Green Bay (14-1, 3-0 HL) to a win with a dominant first half. The Phoenix
picked up its fifth-consecutive win with a 71-57 victory over Youngstown State (2-12,
0-3 HL) Thursday at the Beeghly Center.
Wojta alone had as many points as Youngstown State in the
first half, leading all players with 20 as Green Bay had an 18-point lead
(38-20) at the break. The Penguins jumped out to an early four-point lead in
the first half before Green Bay went on a 17-4 run to take control offensively.
"Julie is one of those people we can always count on," said
head coach Matt Bollant. "She really came out tough tonight and was big for us
scoring 20 in the first half and not turning the ball over much."
Wojta scored 11 points throughout Green Bay's early run before
Youngstown State closed the gap to just five with 8:32 to play in the first
half. The Phoenix answered with a layup from Wojta followed by Sarah Eichler's
(Grafton, Wis.) lone three pointer of the night.
The game remained scoreless for the next four and a half
minutes as the Phoenix went 0-6 from the field before Kayla Tetschlag
(Sheboygan, Wis.) scored a layup with 3:37 remaining, sparking a 14-6 run to
close out the remainder of the half.
The Phoenix scored 26 of its first-half points in the paint
shooting 47 percent from the field while turning the ball over 15 times and
shooting 18 percent from beyond the arc.
"I didn't feel like we were the aggressor like we have been
throughout the season," said head coach Matt Bollant. "One thing that's made us
really special is how aggressive we've been and we weren't that tonight."
Green Bay started the second half forcing defensive pressure
and as a result scored the first six points of the half. The Penguins fought
back, cutting Green Bay's lead to 11 with 10:19 to play and then again with
8:23 remaining before the Phoenix went on a 12-3 run to pace the remainder of
the game.
For the third consecutive contest Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) posted a
double-double finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds while tying a
career-high six assists.
"She's definitely playing more aggressively and you can
definitely see the confidence in her," said Bollant. "She knows we need her to
step up and play now in conference and it's good to see her doing that."
Wojta finished with a game-high 24 points throughout 33
minutes of play, one point shy of her career high 25. Meanwhile Adrian Ritchie
(De Pere, Wis.) led the Phoenix by tying a career-high five steals. Celeste Hoewisch
(Hortonville, Wis.) finished with 18 points after scoring 14 in the second
half.
The Phoenix finished the contest shooting 47 percent from
the field and 25 percent from three-point land. Green Bay turned the ball over
25 times, which is the second most in a game this season.
"We built a good lead but just didn't finish the last 15
minutes with a lot of toughness and aggressiveness," Bollant said.
The Phoenix will face Cleveland State (9-5, 2-1 HL) Saturday
at 1:00 p.m. to wrap up its first league road trip of the season before returning
to the Kress Center Jan. 12 as it hosts Loyola at 7 p.m.
