CLEVELAND,
Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The No. 20 Green Bay
(15-1, 4-0 HL) women's basketball team overcame adversity while snapping
Cleveland State's (9-6, 2-2 HL) six-game winning streak on its home court with
a 63-55 win to wrap up its first league road trip of the season.
"They're a good basketball team and a good team can make
runs like they did today, they've played in two of the last three NCAA
Tournaments for a reason," said head coach Matt Bollant.
The Phoenix scored the first six points before allowing the
Vikings a bucket at the 15:40 mark. Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis.) scored seven of Green Bay's first nine points
before leading all players with nine throughout the first half of play.
With sophomore Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) out with a knee injury three minutes into the
game, Green Bay was forced to sub and rely on its bench earlier than usual. Lydia
Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill) came off
the bench and scored five points while grabbing three boards throughout 12
minutes of play.
"Our bench really gave us a boost when Adrian went out.
Stephanie grabbed some huge rebounds, Hannah stepped right in and Lydia scored
some key buckets for us," Bollant said. "I was real proud of how they played."
Green Bay built its first half lead to 10 with 10:43
remaining after Julie Wojta (Mishicot,
Wis.) hit a jumper to make it 16-6. Cleveland State came as close as four with
8:48 left in the half and then again with 3:43 left after Destinee Blue
converted a three-point play off Wojta's third foul.
The Phoenix finished the half with a 12-point lead after Kayla
Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) drained
a jumper from the top of the key with nine seconds remaining, giving Green Bay
its biggest lead, 33-21, at the break. In addition to Eichler, Tetschlag
finished the half pouring in nine points while grabbing four boards.
The Phoenix shot 44 percent from the field and 83 percent
from the charity striped throughout the first 20 minutes of play. 18 of Green
Bay's 33 first-half points came in the paint as the Phoenix shot 22 percent
from beyond the arc.
In the second half, Wojta picked up her fourth foul with
18:06 to play before Green Bay built its lead to as many as 15 with 17:36
remaining.
"It's hard to play with four fouls, I had to change my
mindset a little bit but at the same time wanted to stay competitive," said
Wojta who was one of four Phoenix players to finish with 13 points.
After the Vikings cut Green Bay's lead to nine with 11:16
remaining, Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville,
Wis.) answered by draining a three from the left wing to build Green Bay's led
to 12 (49-37). On the defensive end, Hoewisch forced a turnover and found
Eichler on the fast break for her season-high 13th point making it 51-37.
With 8:42 to play, Wojta, Tetschlag and Eichler each had four
fouls with the Vikings trailing by 8. Cleveland State closed the gap to six
thanks to a bucket down low from Destinee Blue off an in-bound play with less
than seven minutes remaining.
The Vikings cut Green Bay's lead to four with 5:23 remaining
before Hoewisch drained her second three from the left corner to boost Green
Bay's lead back up to seven. Tetschlag stole the ball on defense to and took it
the distance for her 11th point of the contest. Cleveland State answered with a
bucket down low before Wojta cashed in on a layup to make it 58-49 in favor of
the Phoenix.
With 2:11 remaining Cleveland State's Takima Keane drained a
three from the right corner off an offensive board closing its gap on the
Phoenix to six. Following a Green Bay timeout the Vikings applied full-court
pressure. Shooting 79 percent heading into the game, the Phoenix converted three
of its five free-throw attempts down the stretch in the bonus situation to seal
the 63-55 win.
"We had great confidence down the stretch and when Celeste
can guard the ball our defense is so much better. We rise to another level when
she's on the floor applying ball pressure," Bollant said.
Wojta, Tetschlag, Eichler and Hoewisch all scored 13 points
for the phoenix in the absence of number 13, Ritchie. Hoewisch had a
season-high five steals while Tetschlag led Green Bay with six rebounds.
Janelle Adams, Shawnita Garland and Destinee blue all scored in double figures
for the Vikings while Blue and Shalonda Winton led all players with eight
boards.
