GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (3-10-4,
1-4-2) suffered a 2-0 loss to Butler (8-8-1, 3-4-0) on Sunday afternoon at
Santaga Stadium in its final regular season home game of year. Sunday was also
Senior Day for the Phoenix, as the team's two seniors, Corey Arno (Winneconne, Wis.) and Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.), were honored prior to kickoff.
The Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie in the 19th
minute when freshman Stephanie Kaylor netted her first collegiate goal in
unique fashion. Kaylor lined up for a corner kick and sent a cross into the
box. The ball sailed right and deflected off Phoenix goalkeeper Drusch's hands
and into the net.
After taking the 1-0 lead into halftime, Butler tacked
on the second goal in the 52nd minute when junior Katie Griswold converted on a
penalty kick following a Green Bay foul. The score was Griswold's sixth of the
season.
The Bulldogs outshot the Phoenix 13-8 in the match and
finished with an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Elise Kotsakis shot three times to
lead Butler, while Green Bay's Megan
Braatz (Waukesha, Wis.) also registered a game-high three shots.
Drusch made six saves in 90
minutes of action for the Phoenix, while Butler's Julie Burton stopped five
Green Bay shots in her first shutout of the season.
Sunday marked the final
home matches for Drusch and Arno. Over the last four seasons, the two have
combined to play in 131 of a possible 132 games, accumulating nearly 12,000
minutes of playing time. Drusch is the school's all-time leader in saves (378)
and goals-against average (1.15), and is second in career shutouts (16). Arno
has scored a team-best 12 points over the last four years, knocking in five
goals, including three game-winners, and dishing out a pair of assists.
The Phoenix has just one
regular season match remaining on the schedule, a trip to nationally-ranked
Milwaukee next Friday. The 10th-ranked Panthers are 15-1 overall and 7-0 in
league play.
