LeSage Takes Advantage of Opportunity as Career Winds Down

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The weekend did not go as planned for his Green Bay men's basketball team, but senior Greg LeSage (Radcliff, Ky.) took advantage of his opportunities for playing time and had one of the best individual weekend of his Phoenix career.

The senior, with just six more guaranteed games in his basketball career, had his playing time increase in games against UIC and Loyola, and the 6-foot-8 forward showed that sense of urgency and delivered for head coach Brian Wardle.

"It is senior year and you have to lay it on the line right now. The last few games I had not been playing a lot and coach called my number and told me to be ready," said LeSage. "I have talked with [fellow seniors Rahmon Fletcher] and [Bryquis Perine] before every game and we have just said, 'this is our last year and we have to lay it on the line and compete, because as coach tells us it goes by faster than you think.'"

In 20 minutes in Green Bay's 63-61 overtime loss at UIC on Thursday, LeSage hit three of his four shots from the field and scored six points. He then led his team in scoring for the first time on Saturday, hitting 4-of-5 shots from the field and 4-of-6 free throws to post a career-high 12 points. He also added a team-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots in 23 minutes of action.

"One bright for us was senior Greg LeSage," Wardle said after the Loyola game. "He had a great weekend for us and had a sense of urgency, and I could not be prouder of the way he played and competed."

Green Bay returns home from its three-game road trip and hosts Butler on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. For more information on tickets to the contest, please visit GreenBayPhoenix.com/tickets or call the Green Bay ticket office at 920.465.2625.

Below are notes from Green Bay's games against UIC and Loyola:

Weekend Notes

  • Green Bay's three signed recruits in the class of 2011 - Aaron Armstead, Greg Mays and Kiefer Sykes - each attended one of the Phoenix games this weekend. All three are from Chicago area high schools, and Armstead and Sykes attended the UIC game while Mays was in attendance at Loyola.
  • Freshman Alec Brown had three blocks in each of the team's games and now has extended his single-season school record to 58.
  • Brown needs 11 more rebounds to crack the top-five for rebounds in a game by a Green Bay freshman.
  • Junior Jarvis Williams had back-to-back double figure scoring efforts and has now scored in double digits in three-straight games and five out of six contests.
  • Williams has averaged 11 points and 6.5 rebounds during that span.
  • The junior has also scored at least 10 points in six of team's last seven road games, including four in a row.
  • Senior Rahmon Fletcher scored 19 points in the two games and has now totaled 1,593 career points. He is seven points away from becoming the seventh Green Bay player ever to score 1,600 career points and 27 points from becoming sixth all-time.
