MILWAUKEE,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Ask any Green Bay (25-1,
14-0 HL) women's basketball player and they'll tell you that 13 is definitely their lucky number as the Phoenix won at least a share of its 13th-consecutive
Horizon League title with a 77-59 win over Milwaukee (9-16, 6-8 HL) Saturday at
the Klotsche Center. No. 17/14 Green Bay was led by the hot shooting of senior Kayla
Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) who
finished with a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds.
"To be the longest active school with conference championships
is amazing," said four-year head coach Matt Bollant who is 64-4 in Horizon
League play. "Two years ago when we graduated four seniors, Kayla, Celeste and
Heather said they didn't want this streak to end on their watch and they've
been so diligent and have worked so hard to make sure it didn't."
After Milwaukee scored the first bucket of the game, Green
Bay sank nine of its first 10 shots while going 5-5 from three-point range. Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis.) sparked
the early run by the Phoenix who scored six of its points off Panthers'
turnovers in the opening minutes.
"When we come out and start the game on edge our shots
always fall," said Tetschlag. "That's our goal every game, to come out on edge."
With 8:57 remaining in the first half, Milwaukee's Angela Rodriguez
hit a long jumper from the left wing to cut Green Bay's lead to four. On its
next possession Courtney Lindfors sank one of her two free-throw attempts to inch
the Panthers as close as three.
"I give them a lot of credit, they had a good game and
fought hard while we had to face a lot of adversity with Celeste out with fouls
and Adrian injured," Tetschlag said. "They had confidence with the shots they
were knocking down but we kept fighting and overcame it."
The Phoenix opened its
lead back up to 10 (32-22) when Lydia Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill.) scored two of
her seven points with a bucket down-low while being surrounded by four Milwaukee
players. The Panthers' answered by scoring the next six points, sparked by a
three from Anne Breland who finished the game with 11.
Green Bay finished the first half shooting 83 percent (5-6)
from three-point range, which is the second highest of the season throughout
the opening half. The Phoenix scored 17 points off Milwaukee's 13 turnovers as Tetschlag
led all players with 10 points throughout the first 20 minutes while Celeste
Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) chipped
in nine.
First-half
note of importance... After being in the game less than one
minute, with 12:52 remaining sophomore Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) suffered
a right ankle sprain on the defensive end of the court and did not return to
the game. "If it was just my ankle I could've gone back in and played but I
also tweaked my right knee a little bit, but nothing major like the first time,"
Ritchie said. "A few days rest and I'll be back."
Starting at the 14:16 mark in the second half, Lindsay Laur
scored Milwaukee's next eight points, cutting Green Bay's lead to six (52-46)
with 11:27 remaining. It was a back and forth battle over the next few minutes
for the turning point of the game with 7:17 to play. After grabbing a defensive
board, Tetschlag drained her second three-pointer from top of the key to boost
Green Bay's lead 61-49. Following a pair of free throws from Laur, Hoewisch
drained her fourth three-pointer from the right wing, which was part of a 10-2
run by the Phoenix.
Green Bay's biggest lead of the game (75-57), came with 2:23
to play when Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) scored two of her 10 points. Wojta
finished the game tying a career-high eight assists while grabbing five
rebounds in the 77-59 win.
After scoring nine points throughout nine minutes of play in
the first half, Hoewisch finished the game with 14 points, four rebounds and
three assists. As a team, the Phoenix finished the contest tying its highest
shooting percentage of the season, sinking 53 percent of its shots. In
addition, for the first time since Nov. 18, the Phoenix sank over 57 percent of
its shots (8-14) from three-point range, its second-highest percentage of the
season. Green Bay's bench also outscored Milwaukee's bench 12-0.
"We told our players in the locker room afterwards that this
is the only time we want to be selfish, we don't want to share the conference
championship, we want it outright.," said Bollant. "Our goal is to keep getting
better. We're never satisfied with where we're at and we never take things for
granted; it shows in how hard our players work."
Green Bay will return to the confines of the Kress Events
Center Thursday, Feb. 24 to face Valparaiso at 7 p.m. The annual Teddy Bear Drive sponsored
by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will also be held in conjunction with
the game. All teddy bears that are donated will be distributed through Bellin
Health and Prevea to area hospitals. The Phoenix will host Butler Saturday,
Feb. 26 in its final regular-season home game at 2 p.m. Saturday's game is also
