GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - In what might be his last game at the Resch Center, senior
Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) left a lasting impression on the Green Bay
(13-16, 7-9 HL) fans, hitting a game-winning jumper with 11 seconds left in
overtime to lead his Phoenix squad to an 81-80 victory over visiting Valparaiso
(20-9, 11-5 HL) Monday night.
The
senior had just two points with 9:35 to play in the second half, but he scored
11 points down the stretch, including a bucket with 38 seconds remaining to give
the Phoenix a 72-70 lead. The Crusaders tied the score with a layup on the next
possession, and after both teams missed on their last possessions, the contest
went to an extra five minutes.
Perine
took over in the extra session, hitting all three of his shots from the field
and scoring seven points. His team had lost five-straight games, including
three on shots in the last seconds, but Perine was determined to end the streak
for the Phoenix.
With
18 seconds left, the Phoenix got the ball to Perine, who drove right and
knocked down his patented pull-up jumper with 11 seconds left to give the hosts
the lead and eventually the victory.
Valparaiso
got the ball to All-Horizon League guard Brandon Wood, but Seth Evans (Seneca, Ill.) forced the guard into a contested shot in
the waning seconds, and freshman Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) corralled the
rebound for a Phoenix win.
Perine
finished it for the Phoenix, hitting eight of his last 11 shots from the field
to finish with 20 points, but Brown gave the Phoenix a lift as the hosts built
a 16-point lead in the opening half. The 7-foot-1 freshman had 14 points, seven
rebounds and two blocked shots in the opening half, helping Green Bay to a
41-33 halftime lead.
Brown
finished with a career-high 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting and hit all eight of
his free throws. He added a career-high 12 rebounds and two blocks.
Junior
Jarvis Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.) had 14 points, including 10 in the
opening half, and senior Rahmon Fletcher (Kansas City, Mo.) added 13
points, five rebounds and five assists to give the Phoenix four players in
double figures.
The
Phoenix, with their home schedule in the books, will hit the road and play at
Youngstown State Thursday at 6:05 p.m. The team will then conclude its regular
season schedule Saturday at Cleveland State at 1 p.m.
