GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Senior Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored 20 points and knocked down the game-winning
jumper Monday night in Green Bay's thrilling 81-80 overtime victory over
Valparaiso, but his Senior Night performance also overshadowed some impressive
efforts by the team's newcomers.
In
fact, after Perine scored the game's opening bucket, Green Bay's non-seniors
scored the team's next 34 points, helping the Phoenix build a 16-point lead.
Freshman Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.)
scored 14 points and junior Jarvis Williams (Milwaukee, Wis.) added 10
during that stretch. A third Green Bay newcomer - freshman Daniel Turner (McCordsville, Ind.) - scored five first-half points.
Brown's
huge first half, which also included seven rebounds and two blocks, sparked the
best game of his freshman campaign. The 7-foot-1 center finished with career
highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds while running his school-record block total
to 62. He hit 7-of-14 shots from the field, including numerous jump shots and a
dunk, and knocked down all eight of his free throws.
"From
the start, you could see how aggressive he was," said head coach Brian Wardle of Brown. "When he gets
that mentality going, he is going to be a special player."
Williams
finished his performance with 14 points and five rebounds in 36 minutes. It was
the seventh time in the last nine games that the 6-foot-6 junior reached double
figures. He has had at least five rebounds in eight of those contests.
Turner
continued his hard-nosed play, finishing with seven points and nine rebounds,
including two rebounds in the extra session.
"With
[Alec] and Daniel on the blocks, they are only going to get better," said
Fletcher. "They will get tougher and stronger mentally and physically, and the
sky is the limit for those two young guys."
Green
Bay will return to the road this week, playing at Youngstown State at 6:05 p.m.
on Thursday and at Cleveland State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
