Record-Setting Day for the Phoenix in 84-25 Win

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The No. 21/17 Green Bay (22-1, 11-0 HL) women's basketball team jumped out to a commanding start en route to an 84-25 win over Youngstown State (3-19, 1-10 HL) Saturday afternoon at the Kress Events Center. The Phoenix started the game with a 26-0 run before the Penguins' league-leading scorer, Brandi Brown, drained a three from the right wing to put Youngstown State on the board with 8:07 remaining in the first half.

"I'm pleased with the game and our team," said head coach Matt Bollant. "We talked at halftime on how we show class to our opponent in this situation and handle it in the right way. We show them that we do that by coming out and playing the same way, with great intensity and staying focused."

Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) went 2-for-2 from three-point range as part of her 10 points in 12 minutes of play throughout Green Bay's opening run while Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) chipped in seven points and grabbed five boards.

"I thought Julie and Celeste really had a great game for us tonight," Bollant said.

All nine players that stepped on the floor for the Phoenix in the first half put points on the board with Hoewisch leading the way with 14, missing just one shot. Wojta added 13 while leading the way on the boards with eight in addition to dishing out four assists.

Green Bay was dialing long distance in the first half, shooting 58 percent from three-point range (7-for-12). The Phoenix finished the half sinking 76 percent of its free throws while shooting 53 percent from the field. Green Bay's 41-point-lead (49-8) at the half was its largest of the season. Youngstown State's eight points were the fewest scored in a half in the history of its program.

"We want to show our opponents respect and we always want to do that no matter what the score is," said Hoewisch.

Throughout the first four minutes of the second half, Green Bay outscored Youngstown State 11-4 as the Penguins reached double-digits at the 17:36 mark off a jump shot from Brown. Wojta recorded her fifth double-double of the season grabbing her 10th rebound at the 17:05. Hoewisch scored her game-high 20th point with 15:16 remaining.

Every player that stepped on the court for the Phoenix played at least eight minutes. For the third-consecutive game, Lydia Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill.) scored in double figures finishing with 12 points. In addition to Hoewisch's 20 points, Bauer was one of four players to post double figures for the Phoenix. Wojta finished with 17 and a game-high 11 rebounds while Hannah Quilling (Eau Claire, Wis.) chipped in 10 points while dishing out a game-high five assists.

Green Bay finished the contest shooting 51 percent from the field, 52 percent from three-point range and 71 percent from the free-throw line.

Record-Setting Day...  Green Bay set several records in its 84-25 win It's 59-point margin of victory was the largest in program history since moving to Division I in 1987.

"I think the scoreboard means a lot more to everyone else than it does to us," said Quilling. "As cliché as it sounds we don't look at the score that much, we just keep playing our game."

Youngstown State went 1-11 from three-point range, shooting .091 percent. Both statistics tie a Kress Center record for opponent lows. In addition to a Kress Center record-low 25 points, Green Bay handed the Penguins its largest margin of defeat in its program history.

After going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, Hoewisch moves into second place on the individual career record list for free throws made with 369.

Carol A. Hammerle Scholarship... In conjunction with alumni day, during halftime senior Heather Golden (De Pere, Wis.) was awarded the first Carol Hammerle Scholarship during halftime. The scholarship is presented to a Green Bay women's basketball player who has demonstrated academic and athletic excellence as well as leadership. Hammerle was named the first coach of the Phoenix in 1973.

Green Bay will hit the road this weekend as it travels to UIC (10-10, 5-4 HL) Thursday, Feb. 10 to battle the Flames at 4:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader featuring the Green Bay men's basketball team at 7 p.m. Both Phoenix teams will play in another doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Loyola with the men tipping off at 3 p.m. followed by the women at 7:05 p.m.
