GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Senior softball player Katie Cooney (East Moline,
Ill.) continues to battle through adversity in her final season as a Green Bay
student-athlete.
"It's sad, but now that the end is in sight,
all of the work that my team and I have put into the sport and this program is
coming together," said Cooney. "It just makes every game that much more
important to me."
Cooney redshirted the 2008 season, her sophomore
year at Green Bay, due to an injury called the "Unhappy Triad" which included a
torn ACL, MCL and meniscus in her left knee. Cooney battled back from the injury
and had an impressive 2009 season starting in over 40 games for the Phoenix and
earning First-Team All-Horizon League honors.
Cooney had a strong start to her final season
at Green Bay, pitching eight complete games while striking out 64 batters
throughout 86 innings of work but now finds herself battling another injury.
This time she has a partially torn ACL in her right knee.
"I plan on dealing with it one game at a
time," said Cooney. "It may be sorer one day and less another but I plan on
giving it all I have each inning because I don't know how many innings I will
be able to last. This has really made me realize the importance of each inning."
Cooney plans to graduate in the spring of
2012 with a double major in accounting and business administration with an
emphasis in finance.
Getting to know Katie Cooney...
On the field:
I
first started playing softball when I was...six years old.
I played on my sister's 10 and under team.
One
part of my game that I would like to improve this season is...working
through adversity.
My
goal for myself this season is...to make it to the end of the season.
I want to finish and finish strong.
My
goal for the team this season is...to win the Horizon League tournament.
My
funniest team memory is...from April Fools Day this year when the
team moved Coach Rivett and Coach Robert's cars to a different parking lot.
Coach Rivett had thought she made it the whole day without having an April
fools joke played on her until she walked out into the parking lot.
Off the field:
The
music that I listen to the most is...alternative stuff like Jack's Mannequin,
Dave Matthews and Dashboard Confessional.
I
have visited...Cancun.
For
fun I...watch movies, hangout with friends, go to concerts and baseball
games. Go Cubs!
When I have free time I...sort of sew. I just
made a purse.
My
favorite sport to play besides softball is...volleyball.
My
favorite TV show is...The Office.
My
favorite movies are...Man on Fire and Serendipity.
My
favorite food is...sushi.
One
food that I will not eat...is red meat.
On
my perfect day...I would sleep until noon, then go to Door County and bike or kayak
and then go to a concert at night.
The
person I most admire is...my older sister who played softball
at Bradley.
If I could learn to do anything, it would be...how to sew correctly.
One
thing that makes me laugh the hardest is...Shannon Butts.
Cooney and the Phoenix will battle Horizon League opponents the
remainder of the season. Green Bay will travel to Butler April 16 for a
three-game series followed by a trip to Loyola on April 19. The Phoenix will
return home Saturday, April 23, as it hosts Detroit in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
at Ben Garot Field.
