CLEVELAND, Ohio – The season came to an end for the Green Bay softball team on Friday, as the Phoenix fell to the top-seeded Cleveland State Vikings, 4-0 in the Horizon League Championships. The Phoenix exited the conference tournament with a fourth-place finish.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The offense had a tough day for Green Bay, finishing the day with five hits, and going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Cleveland State started their scoring in the second inning after an Avery Robinson RBI single. The Vikings added two more in the third and one more in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.
That lead held the rest of the way, as CSU starting pitcher Melissa Holzopfel, went seven strong, striking out seven and allowing no runs.
GAME NOTES
» Messman led the Phoenix at the plate, going 3-for-3 in the contest.
» Green Bay pitchers limited Cleveland State to just 1-for-5 (.200) with runners in scoring position.
» Kringel got the start in the circle for the Phoenix, pitching 2.2 innings while Genesis Eggart pitched 3.1 innings in relief.
» Sara Ebner was the other Phoenix to get on base multiple times, going 1-for-2 with a walk.
» Bella Herman was the third Phoenix to register a hit, finishing 1-for-2 on the day.
