Phoenix Softball Edged by Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Despite taking the 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning, the Green Bay (15-15, 2-7 HL) softball team came up short in its final series game against Butler (25-15, 11-3 HL) Sunday, April 17 at the Butler Softball Field.

The Bulldogs got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning scoring three runs off four hits, taking the 3-0 advantage.

Green Bay answered in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs off three hits to knot it 3-3 as Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) led off the inning with a single to right field. With one out and runners on first and second, Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) singled to center field loading the bases. The runners later advanced on a wild pitch with Jessica Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) scoring the run to put the Phoenix on the board.

Still in the fourth, Kendra Woepse (Manitowoc, Wis.) grounded out to first base while Amanda Pozolinski (Appleton, Wis.) scored on the play, bringing the Phoenix within one (3-2) of the Bulldogs. Freshman Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) pinch hit for Ashleigh Racer (Waterford, Wis.) and tied the contest 3-3 with an RBI single to left field scoring Reinke.

The Phoenix took the lead in the top of the fifth as Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) led off with a double to center field. Sara Junion (Egg Harbor, Wis.) walked before both her and Omahen advanced bases on a fly out to right field. Omahen scored on an error by the Butler shortstop, giving Green Bay the 4-3 advantage.

Butler took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to left field and held on for the 5-4 win over the Phoenix.

Tieraney Planasch (Juneau, Wis.) and Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) shared pitching duties for Green Bay with Planasch going 2.1 innings and Nannemann 3.2. At the plate, the Phoenix had nine hits compared to Butler's eight.

Green Bay will head to Loyola (16-16, 6-3 HL) for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday, April 19 with a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. contest Wednesday, April 20.

The Phoenix will return home Saturday, April 23 as it hosts Detroit (5-23, 0-8 HL) in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. before wrapping up the series Sunday, April 24 at 11 a.m. at Ben Garot Field.
