Softball Scores 33 Runs in Series Against Detroit

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (18-18, 5-10 HL) softball team wrapped up its three-game series against the Detroit (5-30, 0-13 HL) Titans with a 13-6 win, sweeping the three-game series. The Phoenix combined for 33 total runs in the series, the most against an opponent this season.

After leading off with a single to center field, the Titans capitalized with an RBI triple down the right field line to take the early 1-0 lead. Detroit closed the half inning with a 2-0 lead after scoring on a passed ball.

Green Bay scored five runs off four hits and one error in the bottom of the first inning of play to take the 5-2 lead. Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) led off with a single to second base before Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) advanced her to third on a single to right center field. With the bases loaded and one out, Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) walked to put the Phoenix on the board 2-1. With two outs Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) grounded out scoring Peerenboom to knot the game 2-2. Kendra Woepse (Manitowoc, Wis.) followed with an RBI double down the left field line scoring Butts and Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) to give the Phoenix the 4-2 lead. Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored the final run of the inning with a double to left field, scoring Woepse.

With one out in the third and runners on first and second, Woepse hit an RBI single to right field scoring Jessica Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) who was pinch running for Rivera. With the 6-2 lead and two outs, Ashleigh Racer (Waterford, Wis.) singled to right field scoring Woepse and Andrews, giving Green Bay the 8-2 advantage at the end of three innings of play.

Detroit closed the gap on the Phoenix scoring four runs off three hits and one error in the top of the fourth. The Titans had two singles in the inning to cut Green Bay's lead to two (8-6).

The Phoenix scored three runs off two hits and one error in the bottom of the fourth to boost its lead to 11-6. With two outs Woepse reached second on an error by left field scoring Butts and Rivera before Reinke singled up the middle to score Woepse.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Reinke hit the first home run of her collegiate career sending one deep to right field scoring two runs and giving the Phoenix the final 13-6 lead.

Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) improved to 3-5 on the season pitching four innings for the Phoenix while Allison Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) struck out five of the 10 batters she faced throughout three innings on the mound.

Green Bay will kick off a six-game homestretch hosting UIC in a doubleheader Wednesday, April 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Ben Garot Field in Green Bay before wrapping up the series Thursday, April 28 at 12:00 p.m. The Phoenix will play its final series at home against Valparaiso beginning Saturday, April 30 with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. before playing its home finale Sunday, May 1 at 12:00 p.m.
