DAYTON, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After a two-hour rain delay, the Green Bay (13-11, 2-2
HL) softball team fell 5-2 to Wright State (16-16, 5-2 HL) in the first of a
three-game series in Dayton, Ohio Saturday, April 9. The games were originally
scheduled to be played in Green Bay but due to a late spring thaw the contests
were moved to the WSU Softball Field.
After
Wright State scored two runs off two hits in the first inning of play, the
Phoenix put a run on the board in the bottom of the third, cutting the Raiders
lead in half (2-1). Sara Junion (Egg Harbor, Wis.) started the bats with a double
down the right field line before Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) singled to
left field, advancing Junion to third. With one out and runners on second and
third, Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) hit an RBI single through the left side,
scoring Junion.
The
Phoenix knotted the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back
doubles by Junion and Omahen to start the inning. Green Bay scored one run off
two hits while stranding two runners on base.
The
Raiders broke the tie in the top of the sixth inning, scoring three runs off
three hits, including a homerun, to take the 5-2 lead for good.
Sophomore
Tieraney Planasch (Juneau, Wis.) pitched all seven innings for the Phoenix
allowing eight hits while striking out five batters. Junion led the way behind
the plate for Green Bay scoring two runs and two hits through four at-bats.
The
Phoenix will wrap up its three-game series against the Raiders in a double-header
on Sunday, April 10 with the first game starting at 10 a.m. Green Bay will host
South Dakota State (8-25, 5-6 Summit) in its home opener Thursday, April 14.
The first game of the double-header is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. at Ben
Garot Field.
