CANFIELD,
Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (24-22, 10-13 HL)
softball team scored all 11 of its runs in the fifth inning to wrap up its 2011
season with a series sweep over Youngstown State (22-24, 5-16 HL) Sunday. With Green
Bay's 11-5 win over the Penguins, the Phoenix closes its season winning four of
its last five games.
The Phoenix came from behind after
trailing Youngstown State 3-0 before scoring 11 runs in the top of the fifth to
hold on for the win. The Penguins jumped out to an early lead after scoring two
runs in the first inning off an RBI single before tacking on another run in the
bottom of the fourth following an RBI single with two outs on the board.
After four scoreless innings, Green Bay's
offense was dominant as the Phoenix scored all 11 of its runs off of six hits
and three errors in the fifth inning of play. With one out and runners on
second and third, Sara Junion (Egg Harbor, Wis.) hit her team-high third triple
of the season scoring Jessica Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) and Haley Andrews
(Kirkland, Wash.), closing the gap on the Penguins to 3-2.
Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) followed
with a two-run homer to right center field, giving Green Bay the 4-3 advantage.
It was Rivera's team-high seventh home run of the season and second of the
series against the Penguins. With two outs, Andrews hit a two-run single down
the right field line to score Kendra Woepse (Manitowoc, Wis.) and Sarah
Milkiewicz (Escanaba, Mich.) who was pinch running for Shannon Butts
(Greenfield, Wis.).
With the 7-3 lead after Amanda
Pozolinski (Appleton, Wis.) scored on a fielding error, Green Bay boosted its
lead to 8-3 when Danielle Peerenboom (Kimberly, Wis.) reached on a fielder's
choice scoring Andrews. Hrncar scored on a wild pitch before Rivera hit an RBI
single to right-center field scoring Junion for the final running of the half
inning.
The Penguins added two runs in the
bottom of the fifth but Green Bay's top half of the inning was too much to
overcome as the Phoenix prevails 11-5 in its final contest of the 2011 season.
Katie Cooney (East Moline, Ill.) closed
out her Green Bay career from the mound going the distance for the Phoenix
while striking out three batters. At the plate, Junion was 2-for-4 with two
RBIs and two runs.
