GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (1-1-1) showed no
fear as it battled Iowa State (2-0-1) to a 0-0 tie Friday night at Santaga
Stadium.
"I know it goes down as a tie but it was just a really
good performance by our players," Phoenix head coach Trevor Warren said. "We played with a lot of heart and everything
just clicked."
The Phoenix controlled the momentum of the game in the
first half with Hekla Palmadottir
(Akranes, Iceland) getting two close chances at the goal. The first came with
17 minutes remaining when Corey Arno
(Winneconne, Wis.) was dribbling the ball down the field on a fast break,
drawing a corner kick for Green Bay. Palmadottir took the shot off the corner
but was a bit wide.
With 2:09 remaining in the first half, Palmadottir had
another good look at the goal when she received a pass from Renee Therrien (Winnipeg, Manitoba),
beat her defender one-on-one but couldn't convert the shot attempt.
"Hekla's shot was so close but the keeper just got her
fingertips on it," Warren said.
Iowa State controlled the second half of regulation,
firing 12 shots compared to Green Bay's three. Though the Cyclones continued to
attack the net, the Phoenix defense held strong to force overtime.
"We expected a Big 12 school like Iowa State to come in
and wear us down a bit," Warren said. "But our defense was gritty and determined
throughout the entire game."
Perhaps the most notable defensive performance for the Phoenix
was that of senior goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.), who recorded a career high 13 saves and her second
shutout of the season. Drusch's previous career high was 12 saves, which she
reached on two previous occasions.
"She (Drusch) just thrives under pressure," Warren said.
"I think there's ice water going through her veins."
Drusch had a huge save off an Iowa State free kick
situation with less than two minutes to play in the second overtime period. ISU's
Hayley Womack fired at the goal but the shot was blocked and fired again by
Womack and stopped by Drusch.
"She's absolutely solid and doesn't make mistakes and the
girls have so much confidence in her back there," Warren said of Drusch's
performance. "The players can rely on her if they make a mistake they know she
will pull out the big save."
With everything clicking and the defense continuing to
improve, Green Bay's freshmen also continue to step up with two starting at
center midfield and one in the center of the defense.
"Our freshmen are really starting to understand the
system and doing a good job of controlling the ball," Warren said. "I thought Emily Friedl (Kenosha, Wis.) and
(sophomore) Renee Therrien had
really good games, as well as Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.), who was excellent in midfield tonight."
Iowa State outshot the Phoenix 24-9 but Green Bay's
defense held the Cyclones scoreless with Drusch's career high 13 saves.
The Phoenix will look to continue to improve as it faces
yet another tough test at Wisconsin (1-1-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the McClimon
Complex in Madison. Wisconsin is coming off a win over No. 23 Washington on
Friday night.
