WATERLOO, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (2-5-2) suffered its
third straight one-goal decision on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Northern Iowa
(3-4-1) at the Cedar Valley Youth Soccer Complex. The Panthers tallied the
game's lone goal just three minutes after kickoff to secure their first win
over the Phoenix since 2007.
Despite
outshooting UNI 13-8 in the contest and holding the opposition scoreless in the
final 87 minutes, the Phoenix was unable to slide a shot past Panthers'
goalkeeper Erin Zaideman, who made five saves Sunday in her first win of the
season.
UNI
struck at the 3:06 mark when junior midfielder Kiki McClellan beat Phoenix
keeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) following a feed from classmate
Ashley Capone. It was McClellan's first goal of 2011 and Capone's first assist.
Green
Bay's freshman midfielder Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) led all
players with five shots in the contest, including two on goal, while sophomore
teammate Renee Therrien (Winnipeg, Manitoba) shot three times. McClellan
paced the Panthers with four shots and the game's only score.
Drusch
played all 90 minutes in goal for the Phoenix, making four saves. The senior
now has 339 career saves and is just 14 away from becoming the school's
all-time leader in the respective statistical category (352 by Laura Sandt,
1994-97).
The
Phoenix wraps up its longest road trip of the 2011 campaign next Friday when it
travels to Valparaiso for its Horizon League opener. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
CT at Eastgate Field. Green Bay then returns home for its final non-conference
bout of the season when it hosts Western Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m.
at Santaga Stadium.
