GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - In the fall 2011 semester, the student-athletes at UW-Green Bay again saw their hard work in the classroom pay off in impressive numbers. The UW-Green Bay student-athletes teamed up to post a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the 24th consecutive semester, highlighting an impressive academic semester for the Phoenix.

With 13 of the 16 athletics teams achieving a team GPA of at least 3.0, the athletics department posted a department-wide GPA of 3.20, its highest GPA since a 3.25 semester GPA back in the spring of 2003. The 3.20 GPA was the highest fall semester GPA during the streak, which dates back to the spring of 2000. Over 62% of the student-athletes had a 3.0 or higher while eight percent (19) had a perfect 4.0 this fall.

"It is a strong statement as to what is important to our program, and certainly the academic side and how are student-athletes succeed in the classroom is extremely important to Green Bay Athletics," said Director of Athletics Ken Bothof. "We take a lot of pride in the effort our student-athletes give academically as well as athletically, and this semester's success highlights their hard work."

The women's volleyball team posted a staggering GPA of 3.71, the highest of any Phoenix program during the semester. The men's tennis team had the highest GPA among men's programs, registering a 3.54.

The athletics department and numerous high-achieving student-athletes will be honored on Thursday night at Academic Achievement Night presented by Prevea Health, which will be held at the Resch Center as the Green Bay men's basketball team takes on Valparaiso at 7:05 p.m. CT.

During a halftime ceremony on Thursday, Green Bay Athletics and Prevea Health will reward 138 student-athletes who have posted a 3.5 GPA or higher in the spring and/or fall semesters in 2011. In addition, 34 student-athletes will be recognized for achieving perfect 4.0 GPAs.

In addition, all faculty and staff in attendance will be recognized during a pregame announcement for their commitment, hard work and understanding in helping the UW-Green Bay student-athletes achieve academic success.
