GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Cole Stefan has
joined the Green Bay men's basketball team as a walk-on, head coach Brian Wardle announced on Thursday.
Stefan, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard who played his freshman season at La Salle
in 2010-11, will be eligible to practice with the Phoenix immediately and will be
eligible to play in competition beginning in the spring of 2013 as a sophomore.
"We are really excited to have Cole join our program,"
Wardle said. "He is a very good player and great shooter who has proven he can
play well at the Division I level. Especially with our recent injuries, he will
be able to help our program immediately by providing depth in practice, and we
look forward to his future impact on the court."
A native of Minnetonka, Minn., Stefan was a three-star
recruit after playing his prep basketball at Minnetonka High School and having
a strong run on the AAU circuit with Net Gain Sports. He was a finalist for Mr.
Basketball as a senior when he averaged 19.3 points per game and helped
Minnetonka to a state championship in 2008. Stefan received a scouts grade of
90 by ESPNU and was ranked as the 54th ranked shooting guard nationally.
Stefan chose La Salle among scholarship offers from Auburn,
USC, Northern Iowa, Nevada and others. As a freshman at La Salle, Stefan played
25 games, including one start, and averaged 4.6 points per game while shooting
37.8 percent (31-82) for the Atlantic 10 program.
During the campaign, Stefan scored a season-high 15
points on two occasions (vs. Richmond, Dayton). He knocked down 5-of-11
three-pointers against Dayton and made three or more shots from long range in
five different games.
Green Bay returns to action and completes a three-game
road trip next Saturday, Jan. 7 at Milwaukee at 7 p.m. The contest will be
televised live on Time Warner Cable Sports32.
